The New Jersey gubernatorial election of 2009 is taking place on November 3, 2009.
Democratic Governor Jon Corzine is running for a second term and is being challenged by Republican Chris Christie, Independent Christopher Daggett, and ten others. While polls taken during most of the campaign showed Christie in the lead, polls taken over the last two weeks leading up to the election have shown a much closer race between Corzine and Christie. In these most recent polls, Corzine has led in some, Christie has led in others, and still others have indicated a statistical dead heat.

This will also be the first election to fill the newly created office of lieutenant governor. The candidates for governor and lieutenant governor will be joined together as a single choice, so that voters will not have the opportunity to split the ticket.

Today, the first part of Election Day is over in New Jersey, as polls closed minutes ago across the state.
Now, voters and candidates alike will sit anxiously as results start coming in and learn who will be the state’s governor for the next four years.

Over and above, all 80 seats of the General Assembly are up for election today, as well as a special Senate race in the 23rd Legislative District.
