The glockenspiel is a musical instrument and is similar to the xylophone, in that it has tuned bars laid out in a fashion resembling a piano keyboard, In glockenspiel’s bars are metalic, while  Xylophone’s bars are wooden.

In Germany, a carillon is also called a Glockenspiel. An electric piano and an older keyboard called the Clavinet. It has a little synth and a sampler. And Mike has his drum set, a Glockenspiel and a computer.

Many musicians like, Mike and Jared Bell were influenced by the Beatles, but their earliest songwriting efforts came as they jammed together until they would stumble onto something cool. They would then turn that jewel into a song.

Jared said, “We played basic rock stuff, but we also very quickly got into a lot of jazz, and even like weirder Ornette Coleman and kind of experimental jazz.”

Jared thinks, he got off to a late start developing his musical chops, don’t think of the Bell brothers as some anemic-sounding synthesizer nerds. Lymbyc Systym has been fine-tuning their music for years.

Glockenspiels are still quite popular and appear in almost all genres of music ranging from hip hop to jazz.

Lymbyc Systym will play on Friday, July 10, at the Spanish Moon. For more information on the band, go to http://www.lymbycsystym.com.
